IFAW mobilizes animal rescue teams to Japan
The Yarmouth Port-based International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has mobilized animal rescue teams to Japan in the wake of the recent earthquake and tsunami and the ongoing nuclear threat.
The teams will assess and assist with animal rescue efforts. IFAW will primarily assist with companioin animals and backyard livestock. The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is attending to the majority of the livestock issues, according to the organization.
“The humanitarian needs remain overwhelming but given the important role that companion animals play in the Japanese family and the important role that livestock plays in the Japanese economy, it’s important that we address the issues immediately,” said IFAW’s Disaster Manager Dr. Dick Green. “IFAW has reached out to local rescue groups, veterinary associations, and governmental agencies and is determining the best way to assist in the relief process.”
